About this test
The alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) tumor marker test measures AFP, a protein normally produced by the fetal liver and yolk sac and present only at low levels after birth. Certain tumors, including liver cancer and germ cell tumors of the testis or ovary, can raise AFP levels, and chronic liver disease can also increase it. The test is used to support diagnosis and especially to monitor response to treatment and detect recurrence. It is interpreted together with imaging and other findings.
What this test measures
- Alpha-Fetoprotein (AFP) A protein measured in blood that can be elevated in certain liver and germ cell tumors.
Who this test may be right for
- People with known or suspected liver cancer
- Individuals with a germ cell tumor being monitored
- Patients at high risk of liver cancer undergoing surveillance
- People being followed after treatment for an AFP-producing tumor
Before your visit
- No fasting is usually required
- Report any pregnancy, liver disease, or recent treatment
- Tell the phlebotomist about medications and conditions affecting the liver
- Follow any specific instructions included with your order
Understanding your results
A high AFP level can occur with liver cancer, germ cell tumors, or liver disease, and it is also normally elevated during pregnancy. Because it is not specific to one condition, AFP is interpreted with imaging, other tumor markers, and clinical findings. A normal level does not exclude cancer, and levels are often tracked over time. Discuss your AFP result and what it may mean with a healthcare provider.

Questions people ask
What is alpha-fetoprotein (AFP)?
AFP is a protein normally made by a developing fetus. After birth it is usually low, so an elevated level in an adult can be a signal of certain tumors or liver disease.
Is AFP used to screen for liver cancer?
It is often used alongside imaging for people at high risk of liver cancer. AFP alone is not definitive, so it is interpreted with scans and other tests.
Can AFP be elevated without cancer?
Yes. Pregnancy and chronic liver disease can raise AFP, which is why it is interpreted in context rather than on its own.
Do I need to fast for an AFP test?
Fasting is generally not required for AFP. Follow any specific instructions provided with your order.
What does the Alpha-Fetoprotein (AFP) Tumor Marker Test measure?
This blood test determines Alpha-Fetoprotein (AFP or a-Fetoprotein) levels.
Do I need to fast before this test?
Follow the lab's instructions.
How long do results take?
Most Alpha-Fetoprotein (AFP) Tumor Marker Test results are released in 1-3 business days. Specialty testing can take longer.
