This blood test measures dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a potent androgen derived from testosterone. DHT is formed in tissues by the action of an enzyme and plays an important role in male sexual development, prostate growth, and body and facial hair patterns. In women, DHT is present at low levels but can contribute to excess hair growth or acne when elevated. The test is ordered to investigate male pattern hair loss, evaluate masculine characteristics, and help assess androgen-related conditions in both men and women. Results are interpreted with sex, age, and other hormone measurements such as testosterone.
